How to Handle Rude Responses and Comments from Online Debate Participants
Rude Facebook users cannot be avoided. As a matter of fact, they are everywhere in the World Wide Web. They are often called cyber bullies. It has been found that there had been a lot of cases of cyberbullying that affect lives — to a point of committing suicide for young teenagers. Hence, it is very important to make sure that your debate posts are friendly for your type of audience. If your audience are specifically teens, you have to be careful in choosing your topics. Also, you have to keep an eagle eye on offensive comments and remarks. Always remind your audience to not badmouth any of the other participants regardless if they have a different stance on the subject at hand.
Cyberbullying has been prevalent since the age of social media begun. People from different walks of life, regardless of age, race, and gender, can become the offender or the victim. This should, as much as possible, be prevented from happening in your debate post’s conversation thread. Always keep on a lookout about what is going on in your posts so that you will not get into trouble or get anyone in trouble.
Handling rude responses can be stressful, especially if you are the admin of the page where a controversial post has been posted with lots of rude commenters. Online debate participants need to be warned beforehand that cyberbullying of all sorts are banned. If ever there are offensive comments detected, they have to be removed. You have to state this in your post before you will even begin.
So, the best way to handle rude comments in your thread is to remove them — as simple as that. But if the situation is still tolerable, you may have to intervene in the conversation as the admin and issue a warning. You have to tell the offender that his or her comments will be removed if the offense continues. Furthermore, if the situation escalates, you may block the person from joining in the conversation or any debate topic that you have.
In defense of yourself, keep screenshots of the offensive comments before removing them so you will have strong evidences to show in case the person whose comments you removed or blocked will complain or report. You have to make it clear that rude people are not welcome to join in your fun, informative, serious, or important debate. Respect should be administered in the atmosphere at all times no matter what the topic is.
